Luckily, "I Bet on Sky" succeeds in most places, though its praise may come with a bit less enthusiasm than its two most immediate predecessors.
J Mascis is still bursting with guitar virtuosity, and his voice is as lazy and effortlessly charming as usual. Lou Barlow and Murph add their trademark dynamic to the sound with proficient performances, and, as the trend goes, Barlow contributes a pair of memorable tracks to the album. In other words, there is no mistaking this album as being third-era Dinosaur Jr.
As this comfort zone suggests, Dinosaur Jr. Mascis solo, this time with surprisingly well-fitting keyboards splashed over the top of it. Other than these highlights, the rest of the album is very solid, and is never a chore to listen to. While it may not be a top-tier album for the group, it is executed with a sense of effortlessness that makes it feel like the band could continue making albums of this caliber for a very, very long time.

There's a softer, more spacious feel to those albums; if you go back to the self-titled debut, 's masterwork You're Living All Over Me , or 's also classic Bug , it's amazing just now noisy and claustrophobic those albums were. The albums after Barlow left had plenty of dirt and distortion-- especially Green Mind -- but they offered more space in the compositions, probably because Mascis suddenly had more space in general to work with.
I'm always reminded of those 90s videos of him skiing or playing golf; you get that kind of cleaner vibe, nobody living all over him anymore. That feeling continues onto the lilting, sunny I Bet on Sky. The feel is laidback, and as Mascis promised during the pre-release press run, fairly "funky.
This time, outside the more plaintive "What Was That", the downcast vibe comes this time from a pair of Barlow tracks, the prototypical Sebadoh dust-kicker "Rude" and the jaunty, autumnal rocker "Recognition". These tracks and the "Baby Britain" bounce in general bring to mind what Elliott Smith did when he decided to indulge his Beatles obsession on XO. This is not a complaint: It goes well with the graying hair. It's a subtle shift, but this is neither a move away from their sound nor toward the raging rock of old even with all those warm-and-fuzzy Mascis guitar solos.

As great as Beyond and Farm are, this is better than either of them. At first listen I wasn't sure about this, but it turns out to be a well-crafted, hard rockin', noisy-candy album from the coolest band to survive the pleistocene.
The energy and power are there, along with the superior guitar detail. What is new to me is the buoyant, upbeat bounce on songs like Almost Fare. That took some getting to used to. But just when you think it's going to be a gently bouncing song, it shifts into the effervescing parade trail of hard rock confection: bubbling, oozing, popping, shredding.
I only wish J's vocals were a little farther forward in the mix. The cover art tells you what it's gonna sound like inside: reminds me of Zotz! I give this one 4 stars because, out of the D-Jr. And also, because he played a keyboard. I mean, what the hell? A keyboard? And not even thru a Marshall?
Dinosaur Jr has been delivering work equal to their Green Mind days with the last two albums. Absolutely worth picking up. I too bet on sky. I also bet on Mascis to deliver and this is above average Since getting back together, Dinosaur Jr. This one, "I Bet On Sky", has a wide variety of music that stands out.
I definitely recommend this album to anyone who have enjoyed their past albums and anyone else who wants to give them a try! Since they have reunited, Dinosaur has been consistently making good music, and this is no exception. I definitely miss Lou's in-your-face distorted bass from the old records, though. At the very least, download "Watch the Corners" from this album. Having said that, for those of you who want the "best" of the material from the last three albums, I assembled the following playlist: 1.

As always with Dinosaur Jr. The way all the pieces fit on I Bet on Sky gives you the idea that they're doing more than just letting bygones be bygones, but actually learning to appreciate one another in a way that allows them to play off each others' strengths. The Boston Phoenix. I Bet on Sky isn't the immediate winner that Farm was, but it's emphasis on tunefulness versus smack-you-in-the-face noise makes for a surprising winner and a pleasant late career left turn that gets better with each listen.

Let me start by saying I did not enjoy this album as much as their last effort "Farm".
Now, that's not to say this album is bad because Farm Let me start by saying I did not enjoy this album as much as their last effort "Farm". Now, that's not to say this album is bad because Farm is an incredible album. If that album was an ocean of fuzz with waves of blistering solos, "I Bet on Sky" is a pool party. Much more upbeat, straight forward, and the solos mostly come in tidy little breaks. Some of the turns this album makes are hard to expect and admittedly hard to initially get used to.
The Barlow songs on this one aren't as catchy to me as previous albums. J's singing is improving it would seem. I've always enjoyed his voice, but now it's stronger and more confident. No longer does it sound as if he's mocking himself with every syllable.

But at this point, the early drama isn't as interesting as the fact that the new albums-- 's Beyond, 's Farm, and now I Bet on Sky-- are all good to very good. There is a preponderance of slow-to-mid-paced tunes, with soft traces of melancholy, more akin to J's recent solo album than his jam-tastic Heavy.
